John M. Burke, Esq., presented at the 2021 Kids First Center’s Professional Conference, Substance Use, Misuse, and Abuse: Contemporary Challenges for Family Court

Posted by John M. Burke, Esq. | Jan 03, 2022

John M. Burke, Esq., recently spoke at the 2021 Kids First Center's Professional Conference, Substance Use, Misuse, and Abuse: Contemporary Challenges for Family Court presented by Kids First Center. Kids First Center is a Maine-based 501(3)(c) non-profit dedicated to alleviating childhood distress, anxiety, and suffering caused by exposure to conflict between co-parents. The conference was for attorneys, Guardian ad Litems and legal professionals practicing in Maine's family court system. Mr. Burke provided a general legal overview of Maine's Medical and Adult Use cannabis programs. In addition, he outlined federal implications associated with use and possession of cannabis, including federal prohibition of transporting cannabis across state lines, federal prohibition of firearm use and ownership, federal employment concerns and immigration concerns. Mr. Burke also outlined pending federal legislation associated with legalizing cannabis and banking reform. As Maine's Medical and Adult Use cannabis programs continue to evolve and grow, it is important the legal community is aware of what an individual can and cannot do in both Maine cannabis programs and the associated federal implications. This is especially important in Maine's family court system, which will likely see more adults using and growing their own cannabis pursuant to State law.
